Somatic Therapy

In addition to talking, therapy can also involve listening to your body, not just your thoughts.

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that recognises trauma and stress are held not only in the mind but also in the nervous system. It draws on the work of Dr. Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing), Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score), and Deb Dana (Polyvagal Theory), helping you gently tune into physical sensations, breath, movement, and internal states to support healing.

In sessions, we work together to notice how your body responds to experiences, using guided awareness and grounding techniques. This can help release stuck survival energy, build a sense of internal safety, and support your nervous system in returning to balance. Somatic work is always collaborative and paced according to what feels safe and supportive for you.

Somatic therapy can be particularly helpful if you:

  • Feel disconnected from your body or emotions

  • Struggle with anxiety, chronic tension, or dissociation

  • Find that talking alone doesn’t fully reach what you’re feeling

  • Want to explore trauma in a gentle, body-aware way

You don’t need a detailed understanding of your trauma story to begin this work. All that is needed is a willingness to be curious, kind, and patient with your body as it remembers how to feel safe again.
